Japanese honeysuckle

Lonicera japonica

What

Japanese honeysuckle is recorded by a competent New Zealand authority as an introduced, invasive or managed threat subject. Source context (Waikato Regional Council): Vigorous climbing or scrambling shrub, capable of reaching about 15 m. Leaves occur in opposite pairs. Paired tubular flowers occur from roughly September to May, typically changing from white to yellow, followed by glossy black berries.

Why

The source identifies ecological, biosecurity or habitat risks that make this subject relevant to NZ Ex Games intelligence. Source context (Department of Conservation; Manaaki Whenua — Landcare Research; New Zealand Plant Conservation Network): It invades disturbed forest, forest margins, wetlands, scrub, roadsides, waste places, riparian settings, and low-stature vegetation. Vines can blanket small trees and shrubs, smothering and suppressing competing vegetation. It is particularly vigorous on moist, fertile and often alluvial soils, although it occupies a broad substrate range.

Where

Distribution and current presence are place-specific and must be established from current authoritative or verified evidence. Habitat context (Auckland Council; Department of Conservation): Disturbed forest, scrub, forest and wetland margins, roadsides and wasteland. Habitat suitability is not evidence of current local presence.
