What

Gorse is an introduced, spiny, nitrogen-fixing shrub that is widespread in New Zealand.

Why

Gorse can dominate low-stature indigenous vegetation and alter plant communities, while in some previously forested settings it can also provide a temporary nurse canopy for native forest regeneration.

Where

It occurs across disturbed and open habitats, but current extent, ecological effect and management priority are site-specific.
