What

Wild goats are introduced browsing mammals found in parts of New Zealand, including public conservation land. Source context (Department of Conservation): Feral goats are free-ranging domestic goats (Capra hircus). They are medium-sized hoofed browsers with cloven hooves, short tail, narrow face, and usually backward-curving horns; horn shape, coat colour, and hair length vary widely because feral populations descend from domestic stock. Both sexes may have horns, although males are generally larger with heavier horns and a more pronounced beard. New Zealand. Capra hircus, free-ranging/feral populations. Domestic-goat variation means visual phenotype alone does not indicate local management status or origin.

Why

Browsing damages native plants and forest understorey, can prevent regeneration, and reduces food and shelter for native animals.

Where

Wild goats occupy parts of both main islands; current presence and management priorities vary by place.
