Rook

Corvus frugilegus

What

Rook is recorded by a competent New Zealand authority as an introduced, invasive or managed threat subject. Source context (Environment Canterbury): Rooks are large black corvids about 40–45 cm long, with a violet-blue glossy sheen to the feathers. Adult rooks have pale bare skin around the base of the bill; juveniles may lack this obvious bare patch. They have a long pointed bill and often occur in open farmland, pasture, crops, orchards, and plantations. New Zealand; strongest direct source is Canterbury. Corvus frugilegus. Juveniles can be harder to distinguish; a formal comparison with Australian magpie, raven/crow-like birds, and blackbird is not supplied. Evidence limitation: Comparative confusion-species detail.
