Argentine ant is recorded by a competent New Zealand authority as an introduced, invasive or managed threat subject.
The source identifies ecological, biosecurity or habitat risks that make this subject relevant to NZ Ex Games intelligence. Source context (Manaaki Whenua — Landcare Research): Argentine ants can displace native ant species through competitive dominance. New Zealand evidence also indicates that they can alter litter decomposition by removing invertebrates and microbes involved in leaf-litter breakdown, disrupt pollination systems, increase seed setting in the invasive weed boneseed, and reduce pollination and affect seed size in native flax. They have invaded scrub, mangroves, coastal forest, and native-forest edges, although available evidence indicates they are predominantly sampled in urban/margin habitats and may be unlikely to use closed forest habitat. Effects are therefore habitat- and climate-dependent. New Zealand, particularly urban areas and margins of native habitats; named native-flax/boneseed results are study-context specific. Research basis predominantly 2000s–2011; local impact requires current confirmation. Linepithema humile. Some effects are context-specific; avoid assuming all invaded sites have the same pollination or decomposition outcome. Evidence limitation: Recent local biodiversity-impact monitoring.
Distribution and current presence are place-specific and must be established from current authoritative or verified evidence.
